About The Event

The World Affairs Council of Maine is pleased to present our 2019 Annual Meeting and Dinner, "Thinking Globally, Producing Locally: Maine and the Future of U.S. Food Systems," with keynote speaker Erik Heim, President of Nordic Aquafarms Inc., and Petter Meier, Counselor for Fisheries and Oceans at the Norwegian Embassy in the United States.

What does the future of food systems in the U.S. look like and how are global economic, environmental, and political forces shaping its future? Join us as we explore how changes in international trade and investment patterns combine with cutting-edge, sustainable technologies to offer new systems in food production. Erik will discuss the challenges and opportunities our country faces in food production and why Maine is uniquely positioned as we grapple with the realities of climate change and growing instability in international relations.

Program:

5:00pm: WAC Membership Meeting*

5:30pm: Reception with cash bar, hors d'oeuvres

6:15pm: WAC Remarks and Dinner

7:15pm: Introduction by Counselor Meier and Keynote by Erik Heim

(1) Chicken Marsala: Boneless breast of chicken lightly sautéed served with a mushroom and Marsala wine sauce.

(2) Miso Marinated Salmon: Japanese grilled salmon presented on gingered sweet pepper puree.

About the Keynote Speaker:

Erik Heim is President of Nordic Aquafarms Inc in the U.S., and founder of Nordic Aquafarms in Norway. Nordic Aquafarms is a pure-play land-based seafood company with operations in Norway, Denmark and the US. Previous positions include CEO of Nordic Aquafarms in Norway, chairman of Fredrikstad Seafoods, and chairman of Sashimi Royal. Today, the subsidiary Fredrikstad Seafoods, is the first large-scale grow-out facility for salmon in Norway. Sashimi Royal is selling Yellowtail Kingfish across Europe. Mr. Heim is currently heading up the company´s expansion in the U.S., with large recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) projects in progress in Maine and California. Erik Heim is a dual U.S.-Norwegian citizen, and is educated in the U.S. with a BA, MBA and MA.
