About The Event

Chile is an overlooked leader in the global race to vaccinate against COVID-19. As of March 20, 2021, nearly a quarter of the Chilean population is fully vaccinated, and the country has the third highest number of doses per 100 in the world. Chile is also frequently held up as a Latin American "success story," particular in contrast to Venezuela and other countries in South America that have not fully embraced free-market reforms. However, such praise has also glossed over growing discontent with income inequality, social justice and human rights concerns. Protests erupted in 2019 that led to a vote in October to jettison the country's Pinochet era constitution. There are high hopes the two-year process will lead to genuine reform, but the outcome is far from clear.
