Education : Maine East Asia Seminar

"Views of the East" is a 30-hour seminar offered for Maine teachers who are interested in strengthening their schools’ teaching about China, Japan and Korea. The seminar admits 20 teachers, from public and private schools, who teach courses in world history, world cultures, geography, literature, and the arts to students in grades 7-12. The seminar is conducted by faculty from Maine colleges and universities, as well as independent scholars. Participants receive $500 in stipends and $500 in resources.

“Views of the East” is directed by Charles Calhoun of the Maine Humanities Council, and Matthew Gardner of the World Affairs Council, on May 2-3 and June 22-25 at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.  For more information and application, click here.

The seminar is part of a national program conducted by the National Consortium for Teaching about  Asia and funded by the Freeman Foundation. New England seminars are administered by the Five College Center for East Asian Studies at Smith College. Maine seminars have been offered since 2000 and administered by the World Affairs Council since 2006.
