How Can Conservation Succeed with 9 Billion People?

April 28, 2010

Portland Museum of Art Auditorium

7 Congress Square, Portland, ME

Reception at 6PM with presentation to follow

You may know that the United Nations estimates that Earth's population will expand to 9 billion by 2050 But did you realize that most of that increase will be in cities of today's poor countries, while the world's rural population will level off and begin to decline?  Given the complex interactions between human civilization and nature, what challenges and opportunities do these trends pose for conservation in the coming decades?

The Nature Conservancy and the World Affairs Council of Maine invite you to join Dr. Joel Cohen*, the Abby Rockefeller Mauze Professor of Populations at the Rockefeller University, and Mike Tetreault, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy in Maine, for an insightful exploration of human population and nature preservation.  This presentation will generate debate about how population growth may impact our planet, resources and future.  Despite demographic trends, humanity has the power to change course.

*Dr. Joel E. Cohen is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society.  Dr. Cohen was a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellow and a member of the Board of Directors of The Nature Conservancy(2000-2009).
