The World Affairs Council of Maine will continue its tradition of eclectic and fascinating programming this September 24th when it hosts Dr. Peter Aicher, presenting “The Politics of Water; Ancient Rome, Modern America.” Dr. Aicher will draw from his expansive knowledge in the unique field of “aquapolitics” to compare the water system of ancient Rome and that of modern America. This presentation will address how access to water, the most vital finite resource for human survival, has historically shaped social and political tendencies and continues to form society today. Dr. Aicher is a Professor of Classics at the University of Southern Maine. He is the author of the books Guide to the Aqueducts of Ancient Rome and Rome Alive: A Source-guide to the Ancient City, and is a contributor to a forthcoming UNESCO volume on water supply in cultural contexts. |

He has lectured widely on aqueducts in diverse venues throughout the United States, including the Getty Villa, Hannover College’s River Institute, and the American Water Association’s Michigan chapter. His expertise in ancient aqueducts has also been featured on television documentaries broadcast by NOVA and National Geographic.
Dr. Aicher’s specialized academic background not only gives him credibility and respect in the field, but also provides him with inimitable insight into key sociopolitical phenomena. We feel privileged to be able to offer Dr. Aicher to our Maine community. Please join us on the 24th for what promises to be a truly educational experience. |
