After reaching record highs, the price of oil is now in free fall, and the economy is in deepening recession.  How big a role should the U.S. government play in trying to stabilize the situation?  page 29  2009 Great Decisions

There is perhaps no other issue which has consumed the worlds leadership more than the issue of the future of the global energy markets. The rising powers of India and China are consuming more and more fossil fuels, rivaled only by the United States and the European states. The tension between the desires of free markets vs. government control of energy markets have taken a back seat to national security issue as energy is increasingly used as a political power chit by countries such as Venezuela and Russia.

The discussion led by Clifford Gilpin will focus on the role governments can play in stabilizing the global energy markets while encouraging green energy solutions. The discussion will explore the interplay between energy, the global and domestic economic concerns as well as the role energy plays within national defense and security.
