MICHAEL KLARE TO SPEAK TO WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL OF MAINE 
 
            The World Affairs Council of Maine will host Michael Klare on November 11, 2008 as part of the Council’s International Breakfast Series. The International Breakfast Series is an educational public outreach effort intended to provide briefings on contemporary international issues and events shaping our world.   The title of Klare’s talk will be America’s Energy Future; Oil, Dependency and the Alternatives.
            Klare will speak on the subject of his recent book, RISING POWERS, SHRINKING PLANET: The New Geopolitics of Energy.   Klare’s book and the subject of his talk is an account of how dangerous our dependence on shrinking resources is and how it impacts on the international balance of power. Klare will examine the increasing competition amongst world powers for natural resources and how that competition influences policymakers’ views of our world. As competition has increased, areas of untapped energy resources have become more globally significant, forcing countries that once held abundant raw materials to make strategic partnerships. 
            Michael T. Klareis a preeminent expert on resource geopolitics, arms control, U.S. defense policy, and world security affairs. In addition to being the author of thirteen books, including Blood and Oil and Resource Wars, Klare is a regular contributor to Harper’s, Foreign Affairs, and the Los Angeles Times, and is the defense analyst for The Nation. Klare alsodirects the Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies at Hampshire College in Amherst.       
            The World Affairs Council of Maine is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the understanding of international affairs and supporting international education in Maine. Klare’s talk will take place at the Portland Country Club in Falmouth, Maine.
