OUR PROGRAMMING

The
Council’s origins date to 1962 when a group of like-minded folks from Maine hosted United Nations diplomats and correspondents. In 1977, the Council was officially founded to promote understanding of world events and issues, diverse cultures, and foreign policy and international trade. Over the years, with support from its members, the Council’s annual series of speakers and events has engaged individuals, the business and education communities, and other organizations involved in Maine's expanding global activities and interests.

EVENTS
The Council provides a number of dynamic venues for information exchange, networking, education and development.  Programs, receptions and forums are open to its members, on a preferred basis, as well as the general public.

International Breakfast Series
Four International Breakfast programs are offered annually, covering a wide range of topics of interest to the business community and general membership. A fifth breakfast program, co-sponsored with the Maine International Trade Center, features the Governor of Maine as keynote speaker and focuses on Maine's international relations and trade.

Global Connections Lunchtime Series
These monthly lunchtime presentations feature Maine-based experts on a variety of international subjects. They are hosted by a corporate member in downtown Portland.

Global Insights Series
These early evening "after hours" programs offer an opportunity for people to hear speakers on a range of cross-cultural and international issues.

Great Decisions Dinners

Small group dinners in private homes offer facilitated discussion of a current affairs topic based on a Great Decisions essay prepared by the Foreign Policy Association. This popular event offers networking and discussion in an informal setting.

Signature Programs and Events
Annual programs such as the WorldQuest trivia challenge and the Council's annual meeting and dinner, which features a distinguished speaker on an international topic, are unique opportunities to broaden your knowledge of world events.

INTERNATIONAL VISITORS
At the request of the U.S. Department of State and cooperating program agencies in Washington, the World Affairs Council of Maine provides opportunities for international visitors to learn and establish friendly relations with people in Maine. You can get involved with the International Visitors Program as a home hospitality provider or other volunteer.

EDUCATION

Students and teachers can take advantage of our programming to enhance lessons on global affairs. The annual WorldQuest trivia competition offers a chance for students to test their knowledge of international affairs in a competition against other students, corporate teams, and community members.  Please see our Educator Resources page.
